As of 12/6/23 the balance on you loan account is $7,298.42.

As of 12/6/2023 the balance on the Trust account at Inwood is $1321.22 (which balances with the Trust account at Inwood).  This is after the check for trip expenses has cleared.

Razorback Greenway Days 3 & 4

Wednesday - One of the cool people I met via the Razorback Greenway Facebook Group was Chip S.  He offered a lot of very useful and helpful information such as telling me what to expect on different sections of the Greenway.  He offered to help in any way and gave me his cell.  He offered to ride part of the Greenway with me and I took him up on the offer.  Chip said one of his favorite parts was the ride from Lowell down to Springdale.  So on Wednesday we met in the parking lot of the Super 8 in Lowell and met in person for the first time.  We headed across I-49 and the Greenway was right there at market 20.  Chip was right, the ride down to Springdale was very nice with lots of great things to see.  Chip acted as a guide and we would stop and he would tell me about certain things and events that had taken place.  We took our time and stopped many times but for some reason I didn't take any pictures of the ride.  Chip is a sport writer and also doubles as a spin instructor at the Jones Center in Springdale so that was our destination as he had a spin class at noon.  We toured the Jones Center and he gave me the history about the Jones Trucking Family and the trust they set up for the center.  The place is huge and even houses a high school.  Huge indoor Olympic size pool, ice rink and numerous other sections in the facility.  It was about 11:00 at the time and Chip had things to do.  We were to meet again around 12:30 and hook up with Kim, Chip's wife, for lunch.  So I had about 90 minutes to look around.

On Monday I rode from mile 0 to Lake Fayetteville.  While riding around Springdale I saw a sign that said the lake was 9 miles down the trail so I said "why not" that is a part of the Greenway I can mark off the list and headed out.
I had been up this far up on Monday and now rode down to meet the lake from the other direction.  Time was telling me I better get moving back up to Springdale to meet Chip and Kim for lunch.

Lunch was from Emma's Street Taco Stand and enjoyable.  We ate the Jones Center and a photo was taken.  Chip is much cooler looking that I am.
The original plan was for Kim to take Chip and me back to the hotel in Lowell so Chip could get his truck, load his bike and go to work doing his sports writing job and drop me off at the hotel.  Instead I decided to ride back to the Lowell and climb all the hills Chip and I had enjoyed gliding on the way down.  So I did and made it back to the hotel proud of myself for dealing with the terrain.  I was done for the day and had covered about 28 miles taking in consideration the ride down to Springdale from Lowell, the side trip down to Lake Fayetteville and then back up to Lowell.

Thursday - I had planned to head back to Dallas on Thursday so I got up Thursday morning a little after 5:00 and was on the Greenway about 5:30 before sunrise but it was dawn and easy to see.  I decided I wanted to ride on north towards Rogers and Bentonville so I headed out.

Marker 21 was a short ride north and the ride was peaceful, quiet and enjoyable.  I wasn't sure how far I was going to ride but I knew I needed to be back at the hotel in time to check out at noon so I rode on thinking I would ride until about 8:00 and then turn around and ride back to the hotel, shower, pack and checkout.

The sun coming up offered some cool pics and it was going to be a beautiful day.
There is a significance to these crosses that Kim told me about but I don't remember what it was.  I also rode past a huge medical center, past Rogers and then came around a corner and saw this.....
Yep, it is a stack of bikes arrange in a unique order and painted individual colors.  Quite eye catching.  You can't see it from this pic but in the area on the left close to the ground is an air hose that I assume works.
This maker is close to the bicycle statue and is the edge of Bentonville.  I decided it was a good place to turn around and head back to the hotel.  I had covered 28 miles of the Razorback Greenway twice since I rode all sections up and back or down and up or whatever.  The Greenway is between 37 & 38 miles long so from the edge of Bentonville the next stop is Bella Vista and the trail head of the northern end of the Greenway.

We plan to go back to NWA the second week of September and I hope to ride from maker 28 to the trail head in Bella Vista.  Then I would like to try to ride the entire length from Bella Vista to Fayetteville in a single day.  Chip S. says it's more of a downhill ride than going the other way.  I'll let you know.

What a treat it has been so far and I am looking forward to September.    ....jer

NWA Greenway Day 2

Tuesday was a somewhat easier day from a riding prospective but again more confusing in trying to accomplish my goal of getting to Kessler Mountain Park.  It had been suggested to me by several people to check out this place and ride the loop around it.  I believe it is also a haven for mountain bikers (of which I'm not any longer at 76).  So I start out and finally ended up on trails named Cross Town, Butter Cup and what seemed to be a new trail named Heritage, I think.  Whatever the name I ended up at Kessler Mountain Park.
This was the only picture I took of the park but it is huge.

Using my GPS tracking app in the background I found my way back to the hotel and got ready for evening activities.

During my working career as a manufactures rep I did a lot of business with CenturyTel in Monroe LA.  One of the first people I met was a fine guy named Ron Calaway and we have stayed in touch ever since that first day.  Ron & Sue lived in Monroe when he was at CTL and even though we keep up via FB I didn't know they had moved.  When I posted on FB I was headed to Fayetteville he responded to be sure to make time for us to get together, which we did Tuesday evening.  After a great Italian dinner and some great music the next thing on the list was ice cream, of course!  A unique place they visit often and I love ice cream.

Most of the ice cream was gone but a photo was necessary to remember the evening.

Maggie and I have been discussing downsizing and I mentioned to Ron & Sue that Maggie had been looking into Fayetteville as a possible place to set down roots so Sue took the responsibility of showing us around Fayetteville, both places to live, eat, arts, you name it, we saw it and I appreciated the effort.  As a matter of fact Maggie and I are going back to NWA in early September to do some more bike riding but also to look around with Rob & Sue as our guides.

Tuesday I only covered 10:52 miles in a little over an hour with a moving average speed of 9.2 MPH.  Tuesday was a good day without much riding but there was a stop Starbucks later than night which brings up something that surprised me.

I ride a 10/12 year old Specialized Hybrid and always cleat in when riding.  On my trip to Starbucks that night I didn't change clothes and had on sneakers.  For some reason I didn't feel in control of the bike without being cleated in.  Yes it was dark, yes there was lots of traffic next to the narrow sidewalk but I decided that with my feet in the cleats I have more control of my bike.  Perhaps it was just that occasion with all the unknown surroundings but it was strange.  I'm not the fastest guy on a bike and don't have all the spiffy gear some riders have but I've ridden many years and that night was strange.

Stay tuned for day 3 because I met some fine people via the Razorback Greenway FB Group and got to ride with one guy I met first online and then in person.   ...jer

Northwest Arkansas - Razorback Greenway Trip Day 1

Left 1300 Monday morning the July 9th and headed to Fayetteville to ride the Razorback Greenway.  Arrived in Fayetteville around 1:00 in the afternoon, checked into the Super 8 Hotel and unloaded my bike.
I use a large receiver mount bike rack so it is easy to load and unload my bike.

I was traveling light because I didn't know what to expect.

My objective for the first day was to find Razorback Greenway Mile Post 0 or the start to the Greenway and it took a long time to get orientated to the area and figure out all the trails and believe me there are a bunch.  I had several GPS bike map apps on my phone but none of them really helped me find my way, rather it was trial and error because I knew the general area where the marker was but finding it was a chore.  Luckily I came upon it by accident.
Finally and by accident......

Lots of information!

I had already ridden several miles trying to find the start of the Greenway and not knowing what to expect I just started riding and sort of let things play out.

So I struck out and decided to ride until I reached a point where I needed to turn around and head back before I ran out of energy.  No sag wagons at my disposal although I could have hailed Uber but that wasn't going to happen.

The Greenway is actually about 38 miles made of up different trails and runs from Fayetteville to Bella Vista just north of Bentonville.  There is a trail head in each city, Fayetteville, Springdale, Lowell, Rogers, Bentonville and Bella Vista, the northern end of the Greenway.

This cool bridge was one of the first points of interest I came up on.  As you can tell the trail is wide and concrete and the bridge quaint in its own way..
I came across this bridge and thought the view was worth a photo.  I was told by a member of the Razorback Greenway Facebook Group that they needed rain and normally water is flowing over this dam.

This pic is Lake Fayetteville and was about 9 miles from mile marker 0 so I decided to turn around and head back to the hotel.  Lucky for me when I ride I always have a GPS tracking app running in the background on my phone so I know how far I had ridden, speed, time moving, elevation, etc.  It was pretty handy this time because I had made so many turns and twists in the beginning try to find the beginning of the Greenway.  So I use the tracking app to find my way back to the area of the hotel.
On the way back to the hotel I decided a needed a Starbucks Ice Coffee for my accomplishments so I stopped and was in the process of opening the Starbucks app on my phone to find the closest location and just happen to look across the street from where I was and behold there was a Starbucks.  Got off my bike and walked across the street, ordered and sat outside in mid 80's temps and enjoyed my delightful beverage.

My first day I rode 24.15 miles in a moving time of 2 hours and 18 minutes with an average speed of 10.1 MPH.  Doesn't seem very fast does it but I was not in a hurry and there were lots of climes and places where I had to slow down to cross roads.  More on that in a later post.

PS.  I am just figuring out how to post to a blog and add pictures with notes so stick with me while I figure it out.     ....jer

Trial Run

My upcoming bike ride on the Razorback Greenway between Fayetteville AR & Bella Vista AR is the first time I have ridden a loaded bike with gear needed for several days on the bike.  I'll be staying at hotels at night so no camping on this trip but I hope it is the first of many such adventures.  When packing for this trip the object is to take only what is needed and less is better which is 180° from my normal packing for a trip when I seem to take everything.  Making things easier is the fact that everyday I will be wearing cycling clothes during the day and shorts, T's and sandals in the evening.  I'll be taking some technology gear such as my iPad, multi-charging port, selfie stick, cables and connectors and personal items.  My bike is set up with the Topeak system of racks, bike trunk and panniers so the volume of gear I can take is limited to what the Topeak system allows.

Actually picking and packing the gear was much easier than I thought and turns out to be about 40+ pounds which includes 3 full water bottles.  I decided a test run was in order so I loaded all the gear in my truck, hung the bike on the rack and headed to White Rock Lake to give things a test run.  I loaded up the bike and planned my ride.

I ride the White Rock Lake loop frequently and there are some hills going either direction so I planned to go around the lake both ways to get in all the hills I could.  The Razorback Greenway is terrain I've never ridden with some pretty awesome hills to climb and this time on a reasonably loaded bike.  Turns out it was a piece of cake.  Rode about 24 miles in a couple of hours keeping up a 12+ MPH pace and riding some of the route on my biggeat gears.  Actually I was pretty pleased with myself and considered the test a success.

After unloading my bike and putting it back on the rack on my truck I started home thinking about what else needed to be done to get ready for Monday morning.  I decided I needed to look into repairing or replacing the suspension seat post, clean and lubricate the derailleur, chain, cables and shifters, etc., and give the 12+ year old Specialized Hybrid a washing and polishing which I will do Saturday.

I plan to leave for Fayetteville AR first thing Monday morning so after I finish my tasks on Saturday I will have Sunday to do a final check and will be ready to go.

Terrain Expections

I'd been looking around the net for information on what to expect in the way of hills and other terrain features and found some info on one of the trail map apps I use.  However I had a stroke of luck today when a member of the Facebook Group on the Razorback Greenway posted the following on a thread I had started.

Jerry, a couple of things to keep in mind on this ride. The ride down to Fayetteville, once you make the Crystal Bridges hill, will be downhill most of the way. The ride back is more difficult with some decent hills starting at Dickson St., Locomotion, Turner, Silent Grove, Lowell and the last big one just past Cross Church into Bentonville. There are plenty of places to stop to refuel along the way. There are some busy roads to cross in Springdale and be very careful crossing Don Tyson Parkway. There have been some bike-car accidents there, so check carefully before taking off there even after you get the crossing light. The Greenway is beautiful, especially the area from Lowell to downtown Springdale.

I don't have a time constant on this ride and most likely it will take longer than I expected.  If I need to get off the trail and find lodging for a night then that is what I'll do.  The challenge is there and I think I can handle it but perhaps not as quickly as originally planned.
